The following elements may apply to a generator:
  • Monophasic;
  • Three-phase;
  • Open;
  • Soundproofed;
  • Silenced;
  • Trailer-mounted;
  • With automatic start-up;
  • Vehicular.

A generator is monophasic when it only supplies electricity in this wave form; the tension is 220 - 230 Volt. The power factor (cosfi) of a monophasic generator is 0.9.

A generator is three-phase when it supplies electricity in this wave form; the tension is 380 - 400 Volt. The power factor (cosfì) of a three-phase generator is equal to 0.8. A three-phase generator can also produce monophasic current.

A generator is referred to as open, or basic, or standard, or uncovered when it has no sound protection. By law, the maximum noise level allowed in LW is:

- for generators up to 2 kVa = 102 LWA, over 2 kVa = 100 LWA

- for power-welders up to 200 A = 101 LWA, over 200 A = 100LWA.

The word ‘soundproofed’ refers to generators whose acoustic power is between 96 and 99 LWA.

A generator is silenced when it is below 95 LWA. The best values are obtained with hoods and protective layers made with special noise-absorbing materials.

A generator may have different types of tracking: (click here to see the relative page):

- the slow haulage truck has two (or four) pneumatic wheels and steering wheel, for haulage in areas such as building yards and so on: it is not designed for road transport;

- the road haulage truck must comply with the registration procedures provided in the Highway Code, and must be equipped with brakes, acoustic signal devices, etc.

A generator has automatic start-up when it is equipped with a special electronic control panel that automatically turns it on in the event of a fall in network tension. All electric start-up generators can be equipped with this device. Some generators are however built with this specific aim in mind: they are generally very compact and silent as they are often installed in homes. Timers and other mechanisms that turn on the generator when necessary or established can also be connected to the control panel.

The vehicular generator is designed to be installed on auto-vehicles: to work fridges, hardware, etc. It is activated by a remote switching-on device, for start-up using the vehicle’s battery (and therefore does not have an alternator for recharging) and can be monophasic or three-phase, petrol or diesel.
